Hosting is a type of subscription service that allows you to start and manage a website accessible on the Internet. In addition to hosting your site, most hosting companies also offer domain and e-mail services, so you can send e-mails from your domain.
Traditionally, there are three types of hosting. The most common is shared hosting, generally also called web hosting. When using shared hosting, you can share the resources of a single server with hundreds of other customers. Then there is cloud hosting and virtual private servers. In this case, you get a dedicated share of server resources, which are virtually allocated to you, but relate to a server or a group (cloud) of servers, where other sites and customers are also hosted. Finally, there are dedicated servers, where you get a machine entirely dedicated to you.
A domain is just a name, a virtual address, that only works when pointed to a host server. In order for your domain to open your site, you must subscribe to a hosting service and point your domain to that host.
